Fullerton College is renowned for its theater production and design courses, professional training certificates, and access to the latest in theater arts. The college's annual theatre festival, which began in March 1981, has seen more than 20,000 students from 150 different high schools attend and participate in the workshops and competitions offered. Recently, Despars was honored with the Jim Thomas Theater Award for his distinguished professional career. Despars is a leader in theater arts education and has created a program that produces well-rounded artists. Students enrolled in the program learn all aspects of theater arts, including lighting, sound, costumes, scenography, advertising, and more.

They attend festivals, workshops, and contests to hone their skills and prepare for the complex process of auditioning for university theater programs. The Contemporary Performance Network is not affiliated with these publications but they are of interest to the community.

The CETA Festival

is an annual event that takes place in January. During this time, students perform a ten-minute scene from a production and view other high-level shows. They also attend theater workshops and competitions.

High school theater teachers who have participated as students in the past are eager to be part of the festival. The HSTF website announced additional new categories for ensemble and monologue sections as well as a category for cinematographic performance to better include the media used as theater continues to progress. More than 100 judges evaluate approximately 35 competition rooms every hour and 200 university workers contribute to making this one of the best-organized theater festivals in the country.
